The owners of the Terrace Residence requested a garden space that blended with the native environment of their home site. The site, nestled against a stand of Gambel Oak and Pine dropped steeply to the southeast with broad, sweeping views to the village below. Our design charge included accommodating comfortable access from the upper autocourt to the lower level outdoor terraces. Substantial retaining was planned along the south and east. ALA worked closely with the architect and civil engineer to blend the steep site with the building footprint. In doing so, we carved out an intimate garden room back ing to the native mountain side and focused around a low fire feature constructed of large sandstone slabs, appearing broken by an invading perennial and scrub brush planting palette.
