THE SANFORD DOWNTOWN CONNECTOR IS AN INTEGRAL SECTION OF BICYCLE INFRASTRUCTURE LINKING A TRAILS NETWORK AND ALSO PROVIDING AN OPPORTUNITY TO CREATE A SPECIAL “SENSE OF PLACE” IN SANFORD’S DOWNTOWN. ALA MET WITH THE CITY OF SANFORD, SANFORD TRAILS COMMITTEE, AND THE NATIONAL PARK SERVICE RIVERS TRAILS AND CONSERVATION ASSISTANCE, TO TOUR THE SITE AND GET ACQUAINTED WITH EXISTING CONDITIONS. FOLLOWING THE SITE VISIT, ALA WENT BACK TO THE STUDIO AND PREPARED TO FACILITATE A CHARRETTE, WHICH ELICITED INPUT FROM THE CITY AND STAKEHOLDERS. AFTER THE CHARRETTE ALA AGGREGATED THE IDEAS AND CONTENT PROVIDED BY ATTENDEES INTO A PROPOSED MASTER PLAN, BIKE LANE STUDY, INTERSECTION STUDIES, EXISTING / PROPOSED SECTIONS, AND EXISTING / PROPOSED PERSPECTIVES. THIS ROBUST VISIONING PACKAGE WAS PRESENTED TO SANFORD CITY COUNCIL AND THE CITY IS CURRENTLY PURSING GRANT OPPORTUNITIES FOR IMPLEMENTATION OF VARIOUS KEY PROJECTS ALONG THE CONNECTOR.
