ALA participated in an open competition for the design of a welcome monument for the Town of Basalt. Driven by parameters set by a town designated signage committee, ALA’s proposal incorporates forms and materials which reflect the town’s character and beckon visitors toward the historic downtown. Vertically set basalt stone symbolizes the naturally occurring stone columns found along the flanks of Basalt Mountain, an ancient shield volcano towering high above downtown. A weathered steel sluice bookending the assembly symbolizes Basalt’s rich mining heritage. Brushed steel lettering contrasts the weathered backer panel and grey stone evoking a sense of subdued modernism. At the request of town staff, Terrain designed the monument stem wall and vertical construction to be detachable and modular thus allowing the entire monument to be transported as needed.
