Terrain was hired as the landscape architect for a compact, contemporary speculation home project in Steamboat Springs, Colorado. The constrained site encompassed a steep ridge overlooking the Flat Tops Wilderness to the west. Numerous large granite boulders littered the heavily wooded site between dense stands of Aspen, fir, and Gambel Oak. Terrain assisted the civil engineer and architect by helping site the building within the ridge while preserving large boulder outcroppings. The north portion of the site fall away steeply into a wooded gully. Terrain mitigated the steep slope by proposing native stone retaining walls, allowing for a small patio and access to the east side of the building via a series of steps. Native planting and carefully sited art punctuates the axial relationship of building interior to site.
