In the Summer of 2014 ALA participated in an open competition for the design of an urban plaza site in Edmonds, Washingtion honoring the memories of Veterans of Foreign Wars. ALA developed concepts focused on creating a highly memorable, emotional space that also serves the changing needs of the community. ALA proposed removing the cold, concrete plaza paving and replacing it with a durable gravel and turf blend. Gravel and stone paving provide semi-secluded pockets adorned with sawn wood benches that evoke a sense of the city’s logging heritage. A veterans walk runs east-west buffering parking to the north with a series of digitally etched and perforated steel scrims depicting images of each of the five branches of the military.
