SCOPE: site planning, landscape architecture

DBX 11 is an ongoing project in the Double Bar X Ranch subdivision near Aspen, CO. The owner, a sophisticated Chicago native, requested the home and landscape exude a 'hotelier' look and feel. Guests would be greeted by a gracious, private autocourt before entering the home and being swept up by the awe-inspiring views to the southwest toward Independence Pass and the Maroon Bells Wilderness. The site itself is situated along a series of natural benches with a bluff overlooking the Maroon Creek and ephemeral pond below to the north. The landscape celebrates the historic rnaching heritage of the greater site while exalting the views of the wilderness and river environment to the south and west. A sweeping, low stone retaining wall delineates the private landscape along the bluff, punctuated by a cozy family outdoor den situated around a gas fire feature. Planes of lawn and planting accentuate the terraced site, while a linear pool nestles against the upper hillside.
